Terrence Howard, who played James Rhodes in the first Iron Man film, gave his account of the reason he was passed over for the part in Iron Man 2.

Can't We Just Get Along?

Can’t We Just Get Along?

Original reports suggested that he was ousted based on negative comments he made, as well as scenes which needed to be extensively edited, which led Marvel Studios to seek new talent for the second film.

But Howard has a much different story, as outlined below:

“Apparently, the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they are printed on. And promises aren’t kept. Good faith and negotiations aren’t always held up.

It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.

They came to me with the second and said ‘look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn’t call me back for three months.”

Who knows? Maybe it happened that way or maybe there’s more to the story.  Either way, we’re happy with the decision- Howard didn’t fill the bill in the opinion of this website.  Cheadle brings a much better version of the Rhodey character to the screen.
