“When Mary Moss called David Piontkowski down to the office just 15 minutes before his last day of high school, the voice on the other end of the line joked: “David’s not here today.” It’s funny of course, because David never misses school; he never has; not once.
David, an honor student set to graduate next month from Lapeer East High School, finished out his K-12 career on Thursday as Lapeer’s Iron Man. He didn’t miss a day of school at Bishop Kelley Catholic School and he kept the streak intact through his four years in high school. He’s the Cal Ripken, Jr. of the classroom and one of our finest examples of what it means to be a student.
Even though he admits to getting under the weather at times, he said he was always able to keep himself well enough to make it through the day. So, beyond taking his father’s advice (he’s a doctor) when potential threats to his streak arose, what was his secret?
“I saw all the makeup work other students have to do when they miss school,” he said. “I didn’t want any part of that.”
David is a percussionist with concert and symphony bands who was named a Michigan Youth Arts Distinguished Scholar this year. Earlier this month he participated in the 52nd annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival. He will study music and computer science at Oakland University in the fall.
