“Someone in the city appears to be extremely excited about today’s highly-anticipated cinematic release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The nine-foot-tall Harry Jerome statue located on the eastern side of the Stanley Park seawall has been donning an Iron Man mask and electromagnet chest piece since yesterday.
While the stunt likely pleases local fans of the Marvel comic book universe, it has struck a nerve with the Vancouver Park Board, which has deemed the Iron Man transformation as a form of vandalism. Park Board officials say the costume will be removed later this morning.
It is not known whether the masking was mischief or part of a guerrilla marketing campaign for the movie.
Harry Jerome was a local track and field runner who competed at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics. During his athletic career in the 1960s, he won a Olympic bronze medal, a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games and a gold medal from the Pan American Games. He died of a brain aneurysm in 1982 at the age of 42.”
