“A film buff used a 3D printer to make himself a new hand after watching movie blockbuster Iron Man.
Dad-of-two Stephen Davies, 40, designed himself a new fist after watching the Robert Downey Jr blockbuster.
Stephen, who was born with one hand, became fed-up with the “ugly metal claw” given to him by NHS doctors.
He made himself a state of the art new hand – which looks just like the metal suit worn by Tony Stark in the action series.
Stephen said: “My Iron Man hand has definitely got the cool factor – it looks fantastic.
“Instead of walking down the streets with my hands in my pocket I walk down the street and look cool now.”
Stephen’s prosthetic left hand was built after measurements were taken of his right hand.
The red, blue and black hand gives him “basic grasping motion” which he has never had before.
Stephen said: “I’ve forever spent my life hiding my disability away.
“The hands that I’ve had from the NHS, though some have been more functional than others, have always looked bad.
“They’ve always looked artificial, mannequin-like.
“But my Iron Man hand is a massive improvement.”
Graphic designer Stephen got his hand printed after getting in touch with e-NABLE – a group of volunteers who specialise in designing new hands.
He is now trying to raise £1,000 so he can buy his own 3D printer for his home in Swansea, and make hundreds more hands.”
