The whole project has an unknown quality surrounding it thanks to the casting of 19-year-old Tom Holland as Peter Parker and relatively unknown director Jon Watts taking the reins behind the scenes.

How did Marvel end up with these two? Head honcho Kevin Feige explains in an interview with Collider.

“It was myself and Tom Rothman, and also Jeremy Latcham and Louis D’Esposito at Marvel were involved in that. We met with a lot of people and came down to a couple of very, very, very good final candidates. Jon just – we really liked hid movie Cop Car ,we met with him four, five or six times, and each time he had more and more interesting things to say. And at Marvel, it always comes down to ultimately, ‘We can make a movie with this person for two years, we could spend almost every day with this person for two years. Let’s go.”

Holland had the tough task of screen testing with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, though he obviously passed with flying colors. Feige revealed that dialogue was written up specifically for the screen tests to gauge that actors’ chemistry together. When asked if Peter Parker and Tony Stark talking together held any MCU merit, Feige responded: That was part of it. When we’ll see that ,I don’t know, but that was part of it.”

Downey’s Stark is rumored to be joining Spider-Man’s solo film in 2017, so putting the two in a room together early on makes a lot of sense. Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man will make his MCU debut in next year’s “Captain America: Civil War.”
