“It wasnāt welded together in a cave in Afghanistan, under the threatening gaze of a gang of terrorists – and it canāt fly either.
But Peter Bruceās Iron Man suit certainly turned heads when he went for a stroll in it around Cambridge. And on the guided bus, when he bought a ticket to ride.
Peter, 28, who lives in the city and works at Cineworld, put the superhero garb together in his own āman caveā ā the bedroom of his Cambridge home. Thereās no metal involved ā itās made of cardboard and papier mache.
Peter is a well-known whizz kid at costume creation. To promote movies showing at the cinema complex, he has previously knocked up a cardboard, wearable Formula 1 racing car (to plug the film Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth) and a tank and Spitfire for Monuments Men, which was partly shot at Duxford and featured George Clooney and Matt Damon.
But his latest outfit is not aimed at pushing a new Iron Man episode.
He told the News: āItās just a fun project Iāve done just for myself, to bring a few smiles to the streets of Cambridge. Iāve also been on the guided bus wearing it, which caused a few surprised stares.
āIt took me three months to make, between February and April, but I think the results are amazing, and friends suggested I go out and about in it to see how people reacted. Itās just cardboard and papier mache, painted in the Iron Man colours, and I think it looks pretty realistic.ā
Unlike the real suit worn in the films by Robert Downey Jr, Peterās is unable to soar into the sky. He said: āItāll hover an inch above the ground, when I jump, but thatās all.ā
But he is hoping it will win him a prize in a costume competition at CamCon, the āmulti-genre geekā convention taking place at The Junction in Cambridge on Saturday August 30. The event is for fans of gaming, sci-fi, and comics.
Peter said: āI intend to do a special dance in the costume, to the Iron Man theme music, and I reckon Iāve got a decent chance of winning.ā”
It might not hold up to a tank round, but it’s still pretty cool nonetheless!
